At the same time as Frederick Arthur Bridgman was born, European Impressionism was the predominant art movement in Europe. Painting in the open air, especially the works of Renoir attracted the artist. After training in New York, the painter and graphic artist moved to Paris. The young artist went through the school of Jean-Leon Gerome, whose preferred subject was the representation of oriental motifs. A preference that was transferred to the student.
The first journey into the unknown world took the painter to North Africa and later to Cairo. Bridgman brought many of his impressions to the canvas and became one of the most famous painters who concentrated on oriental motifs. With the painting Funeral of a Mummy, Bridgman made the breakthrough to recognition as an artist. This recognition was sufficient to be represented with five works at the world exhibition in Paris.

On his second trip to Egypt, Bridgman discovered the technique of photography. He brought back not only sketches and paintings, but also numerous photographs. Soon the modern way of representation took on a high significance in his artistic work. The American artist had little political interest. The war between France and Germany had led to exile and interrupted his creative period. However, he had a negative opinion about the colonial policy of France, he himself regularly lived in the countries of Africa and was an opponent of the French ideas.
