Icon painting

Whoever paints an icon follows a body of rules older than any academy; it was set down in writing only late, in handbooks that the Greek tradition calls Hermeneia. They lay down how Christ, Mary and the saints are to appear, down to posture, garment and inscription. In the church interior the iconostasis, the high wall of images before the sanctuary, orders the panels into a fixed theological programme. Even space obeys laws of its own. The so-called reverse perspective lets lines converge not in the depth but towards the viewer, as if it were not he who looks, but the picture. In church usage it is said to this day that an icon is written, not painted.

Within this order arose works of great artistic freedom. Andrei Rublev created in the Moscow of the early fifteenth century, with his Trinity, three angels quietly gathered around a table, perhaps the most venerated work of the entire tradition; the Russian church later expressly raised his art to the standard. On Crete, which then stood under Venetian rule, Andreas Ritzos joined Byzantine severity to Western inflections in the fifteenth century and worked for patrons of both worlds. Moscow and Crete mark out the span of a painting that rewards not invention but fidelity, and in this fidelity has remained unmistakable.
