Early Renaissance

Freshly applied lime plaster leaves the painter only hours: fresco demands that each day's section sit, and it hardly forgives corrections. Beside it stood the panel, egg tempera, paint mixed with egg yolk, on gold ground, finely layered and built to last. With these two techniques, and with the perspective construction that Filippo Brunelleschi demonstrated around 1420 with a mirror experiment at the Florentine Baptistery, the Quattrocento, the Italian fifteenth century, worked out a new pictorial world for itself.

For some painters perspective became a passion. Paolo Uccello composed his three panels of the Battle of San Romano around 1440 as studies of staggered lances and foreshortened bodies; they hang today divided between Florence, London and Paris. Piero della Francesca wrote a treatise of his own on perspective and painted figures of geometric calm. In 1474, in the ducal palace of Mantua, Andrea Mantegna opened the ceiling of the Camera degli Sposi with a painted circular view into the sky, the first of its kind.

Other paths led through colour and devotion. Fra Angelico furnished the cells of the Florentine monastery of San Marco with frescoes of great stillness between 1438 and 1445. Antonello da Messina brought a refined oil technique to Venice in 1475, from which Giovanni Bellini developed the soft light of Venetian painting. And around 1480 Sandro Botticelli joined the new fidelity to nature with myth in the Primavera.
