The days when photography was considered a mere craft rather than an art are not so long gone, but with technological advancements and growing distribution possibilities, it became accessible to a wide audience and quickly became popular. Exhibitions and auctions are now held all over the world and are attracting more and more attention. Galleries and museums are clamouring for the works and their creators. The term "modern" suggests that it is still a young art form. Opinions differ on exactly when a photograph should be classified as contemporary.
